The Littlest Washbear

The Littlest Washbear

This is by far the littlest raccoon that any mother has ever brought to our deck. As a reference, the bowl it is eating out of is 25 cm (9 3/4 inches) in diameter. That's its mother on the left. She is not a large raccoon herself. She is probably just a yearling, making this her first litter.

The baby still shows a little bit of the blunt nose of a very young raccoon (see newborns.) It has 3 siblings, all of a more normal size. Just guessing I would say it is 60% of their size. (Sorry about the poor quality of the photograph, but it was taken under less than ideal conditions, i.e. through a window at night.)
